Prohibition allows violent criminal gangs to control the production and distribution of drugs.

**** Regulation allows government to control the production and distribution of drugs. Theoretically at least, the government is more accountable to the general citizenry than are criminal gangs.

Prohibition - makes the already dangerous drugs more dangerous, as there are no quality controls on the production of the drugs, increasing drug-related deaths.

**** Regulation - imposes quality production controls for safety, reducing the number of drug-related deaths.

Prohibition - ensures there will be no standard dosages and labeling for the prohibited drugs, increasing drug-related death.

**** Regulation - allows drug dosages to be standardized and labeled, decreasing deaths due to overdose and contraindication.

Prohibition - allows minors to have easier access to the drugs, increasing the number of teen drug-related deaths. Black market dealers typically don't ID their customers. Many teenagers claim it's easier to get cocaine than it is to get alcohol or tobacco.

**** Regulation - can impose age restrictions on the production, distribution, and use of drugs, decreasing the number of teen drug-related deaths. Most alcohol and tobacco dealers ID their customers.

Prohibition - encoruages minors to become involved in the illicit drug trade. Teen gangsters don't deal alcohol and tobacco to get rich, they deal illicit drugs like cocaine or methamphetamine.

**** Regulation - discourages minors from becoming dealers. No profit, no incentive.

Prohibiton - prevents legitimate medical users from accessing certain drugs that may medically benefit them.

**** Regulation - allows legitimate medical users to access quality controlled medications.

Prohibition - increases the profit margin of illegal drugs, encouraging their unregulated production, distribution and use. An ounce of black market Cannabis sells for $100-400 per ounce, depending on the strain and region of sale.

**** Regulation - decreases the profit margin of illegal drugs, discouraging their unregulated production, distribution and use. An ounce of regulated Cannabis is produced by the U.S. Government (at the University of Mississippi) for 30 cents an ounce.

Prohibition - funds terrorist organizations, encouraging their involvement in illicit drug trade. Terrorist organizations don't invest in oregano, because oregano holds minimal profit when compared with the immense profits of other crops used in the black market drug trade. It's highly likely that at least some of the money used to fund the 9-11 attacks was obtained through the illegal drug trade.

**** Regulation - defunds terrorist organizations, giving them less of a market share.

Prohibition - corrupts police, causing citizens to disregard the law and those who enforce it

**** Regulation - prevents a major avenue of police corruption

Prohibition - forces police to focus on protecting people from themselves, causing citizens to disregard the law and those who enforce it

**** Regulation allows police to focus on protecting and serving, preserving the peace, and preventing and solving violent crimes, thus encouraging general respect for the law among the citizenry

Prohibition - fills jails with nonviolent users, causing more violent criminals to be released early or to serve no time at all, causing more violent crime.

**** Regulation - allows jails to be reserved for people who violate the fundamental right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness of their fellow citizens. Reducing violent crime will also reduce drug abuse, as victims of violent crime have much higher rates of substance abuse as they seek to self-medicate symptoms of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress.

Prohibition - criminalizes users, pushing them underground, making them less likely to receive treatment, increasing drug abuse and drug-related deaths. ****

Regulation - medicalizes users rather than judging them, making them more likely to receive treatment, decreasing drug abuse and drug-related deaths.

Prohibition - ensures the majority of revenue allocated to fight drug abuse will be expended on enforcement and incarceration, limiting availability of education and treatment, increasing drug abuse and drug-related deaths.

**** Regulation - allows more money to be spent on anti-drug abuse education and treatment, decreasing drug-related deaths. For example, tobacco usage rates were reduced about 50% in twenty years, through education and access to alternative delivery methods like gums and patches, without a single person being thrown in jail.

Prohibition - ensures black market drug revenues are untaxed

**** Regulation - allows drugs to be taxed

Prohibition - expends nearly 100 billion U.S. tax dollars annually (this comes to $333 dollars annually, on average, per U.S. citizen)

**** Regulation - allows those 100 billion dollars to either be returned to the American taxpayer, or to be divested to more effective programs to increase quality of life and public safety for our communities and kids.

REGULATION IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE TOOL AVAILABLE TO FIGHT DRUG ABUSE. BUT ONLY A LEGAL PRODUCT CAN BE EFFECTIVELY REGULATED.

THE WAR ON DRUG ABUSE, ADDICTION AND DEATH DOES NOT NEED TO BE ABANDONED. WE JUST NEED TO CHANGE OUR STRATEGY.
